For 2012 and beyond:  New start location, new sights to see and new routes to ride!   Whether it is seeing the reasons Ocracoke beaches are ranked among the top in the world, how flight came into being, nights in Rodanthe, viewing lighthouses or just watching windsurfers from behind your handlebars – there is something for everybody. Join us for this beautiful trip that will not be easily forgotten.

       

Day 1, Saturday

Check-in throughout the day in Nags Head, North Carolina. Visit the beauty and heritage of one of the country's most notable vacation destinations. Visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial, go for a swim, take a walk on Jennette's Piier or enjoy the beauty of the ocean. In the evening meet new friends during the Welcome Dinner and Get Together.  Then sleep to the relaxing sound of ocean waves.

Dinner: South Beach Grille
Menu Selection (based on 2011 trip):

  • Blackened Tuna 
  • Baked Salmon 
  • South Beach Pasta - plain, with tuna, shrimp or chicken
  • Delmonico Steak
  • Caribbean Pork Tenderloin

Day 2, Sunday

Start your journey south on the Outer Banks, passing through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore with the Pamlico Sound on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Ride through the area where pirates previously placed lanterns on horses at night to simulate ships, leading to shipwrecks and bounty for the pirates. Ride the free ferry to Ocracoke Island.  Breakfast and Dinner with the group.  [46 or 59 or 69 miles, usually, though we cannot promise, the ride south has a tailwind]

Breakfast:  Continental breakfast buffet & coffee/tea provided by Surf Side Hotel.  Featuring fresh fruit, toast, oatmeal, cereal, hard boiled eggs, baked goods and yogurt.

Menu Selection (based on 2011 trip):
  • Fried Oysters - 1 dozen *Virginian-Pilot Nominated BEST*
  • Seafood Platter - grilled or fried - Fish of the day, oysters, and shrimp served with a small crawfish cake and garlic butter
  • Crab Cakes - sautéed and served with Creole remoulade sauce
  • Filet of Beef – grilled - 8 oz. with mushrooms and a demi-glace
  • Vegetable Ravioli - served on a bed of fresh sautéed spinach

Day 3, Monday

Bike from Ocracoke catching sites, including light houses, museums and shops.  Ride the free ferry from Ocracoke Island.  Visit the small unique Ocracoke's shops or the Island Lighthouse, the 2nd oldest lighthouse in service in the United States. Walk the beach ranked best in the US, reliving the walk of the most famous pirate, Blackbeard. Breakfast and dinner with the group. Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Stop and watch the surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers.  Ride through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore viewing the nation’s tallest lighthouse. [27 Miles]

Breakfast:  Continental breakfast & coffee/tea provided by Anchorage Inn, featuring oatmeal, cereal and muffins.

Day 4, Tuesday

Continue north on the Outer Banks islands to Nags Head passing through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.  Stop and view the area on observation platforms. View the smoke stack of a sunken civil war vessel still visible 100 yards offshore.   Enjoy the sites, restaurants and beaches in Nags Head.  Breakfast with the group. [37 or 47 miles]

Breakfast:  Continental breakfast buffet & coffee/tea provided by Surf Side Hotel, featuring fresh fruit, toast, oatmeal, cereal, hard boiled eggs, baked goods and yogurt.

Dinner: The Dunes Restaurant
Menu Selection (based on 2011 trip):

  • Fresh Pamlico Flounder – A Nags Head tradition.  Fresh, local fish broiled or fried.
  • Broiled/Fried Seafood Platter – Fresh flounder, shrimp, scallops, oysters and a crab cake.
  • Homemade Crab Cakes – Two crab cakes made from a tasteful blend of crabmeat and spices.  The Dunes Restaurant’s secret recipe.
  • Seven Sisters Platter – Grilled or southern fried chicken breast topped with Monterey cheese, grilled mushrooms and onions.

Above entrées are served with The Dunes’ hushpuppies and the choice of two:  French fries, Idaho baked potato, baked sweet potato, Carolina rice, coleslaw or fresh vegetable of the day.

  • Vegetarian/pasta choice: Fettuccini Alfredo – Fettuccini in a homemade Alfredo sauce (with or without seafood); pasta served with a fresh garden salad and The Dunes Hushpuppies. 

Day 5, Wednesday

Ride to the Elizabethan Gardens, built as a living memorial to Sir Walter Raleigh’s lost colonists, The Gardens include statues and Elizabethan-style buildings to take you back to the time of Queen Elizabeth I.  Visit the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, England's first home in the New World.  On the way back stop and see the Bodie lighthouse. [0 or 23 miles]

Breakfast:  Coffee, toast, oatmeal, bananas and yogurt.

Day 6, Thursday

Take the bike paths from the hotel to Duck, North Carolina. Duck is a quiet, charming northern Outer Banks with 7 miles of clean beaches, miles of bike path and a walkable village center with shops, restaurants and a soundfront park.  For the more adventurous ride to the Currituck Light house. Enjoy a farewell dinner with the group.  [0 or 40 or 69 miles]

 

Breakfast:  Continental breakfast buffet & coffee/tea provided by Surf Side Hotel, featuring fresh fruit, toast, oatmeal, cereal, hard boiled eggs, baked goods and yogurt.

Dinner: Miller’s Waterfront Restaurant

Menu Selection (based on 2010 trip):
Soft Drink/Tea
+ Menu choices:
  • Seafood Trio – one of the Miller’s Waterfront specialties featuring shrimp, scallops and a crab cake broiled in a light garlic and white wine sauce.
  • Montreal Chicken – boneless skinless breast seasoned with pepper, onion and garlic spice atop black beans and rice.
  • Vegetarian Pasta - Your choice of tomato basil marinara, parmesan alfredo or sun dried tomato pesto cream sauce.
  • Signature Salad - Fried oysters or grilled chicken over fresh garden greens topped with dried cranberries, walnuts and crumbled goat cheese, serve with house made raspberry vinaigrette.

Day 7, Friday

Ride on your own before saying goodbye and heading home.  Breakfast with the group.

Breakfast:  Continental breakfast buffet & coffee/tea provided by Surf Side Hotel, fFeaturing fresh fruit, toast, oatmeal, cereal, hard boiled eggs, baked goods and yogurt. 


Please note all trip information is based on previous trips and/or contracted lodging and restaurants and is subject to change based on availability or specific trip needs.

Riding difficulty:
Riders who are comfortable riding at least 10 miles per hour should have a very enjoyable trip without any hills (the only hill is one bridge).
All riders may ride at their own pace, slow or fast.  If a rider is tired or feels like riding less on any day, the SAG vehicle will transport the rider to the hotel.

Arriving by Automobile:
Drive to the Surfside hotel, 6701 South Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head, North Carolina, leaving your car at the hotel for the duration of the trip.

Arriving by Plane:
Airports closest to the Outer Banks are Norfolk International Airport and Newport News Regional Airport to the north and the Raleigh/Durham airports to the west.

Deposit:
$200 due to reserve your spot and the remainder due 45 days before the trip start.
